Today’s post is about the Fat Bottom Bag.  Fat Bottom Bags are lovely unique retro bags crocheted with cotton or acrylic yarns. 

Have you seen a Fat Bottom Bag?  I love making the Fat Bottom Bag.    If you like making granny squares, you will enjoy crocheting a Fat Bottom Bag. 

The body of the bag is one large granny square (about 18” square) with a few rows of single crochet on the two sides and top edges.  Most bags have some kind of wood or plastic handle, though I have seen them with crocheted handles.

Below is a picture of a Fat Bottom Bag that I crocheted using scrappy pieces of cotton yarn.  I lined up the small balls of yarn on a coffee table and arranged the colors.  But a random selection would also be unique and pretty.

The rounds are not all one color as you can see in the 2^nd/ 3^rd row down from the lace – a little bit of brown and a little peach for a few double crochet clusters.  The sides and top are navy blue.  Over three layers of lace at the top, I added some flowers that match the colors of the bag and three crocheted yarn chains with attached beads.  The round bamboo handles (from Joann) are perfect for this type of bag.

Here is another Fat Bottom Bag that I crocheted with acrylic yarn.

I lined both bags with matching cotton cloth.  For the lining, I measured the size of my large granny square. I cut two pieces of cotton the size of the square plus one inch. With right sides facing and my sewing machine, I sewed the pieces together with a 1/2″ seam all around except for a 4″ opening. After turning the piece right side out, I ironed the piece and top-stitched around all the edges. Then I hand sewed the cotton piece to the granny square just below the last stitch of the outside edge.

I used two layers of fabric for the lining to give the bag a little stability and strength and added a pocket or two. Hand sewing the lining to the bag seemed to take forever, but the finished product looks so good. For future bags, I will try fabric glue or machine sewing the lining to the yarn bag.

I first heard of the Fat Bottom Bag when I came across this blog Parisian Chique Fat Bottom Bag around 2015.  Then in 2016 I started seeing several Fat Bottom Bags on Pinterest.  As a tribute to the author of the blog who died suddenly in 2016, people were crocheting Fat Bottom Bags and posting pictures of the bags online.
