Today’s pattern is a simple Market Bag. This Crochet Market Bag would be great for shopping at the grocery store or farmer’s market, carrying other crochet projects or going to the pool.
Basic crochet stitches – single crochet, half double crochet and double crochet stitches are all you need to know to make this Market Bag. The instructions have detailed directions for crocheting the handle.
The bag measures 16 ¼” z 9 ¼” (not including the handles). The handles are short and sturdy. Some shoulder straps really stretch and almost make the bag unusable, so I created this bag to be a ‘handbag’ and not a ‘shoulder bag.’

Notes:
- Count stitches at the end of each row
- Some crocheters use a Ch 3 at the beginning of a dc row/round. I prefer a Ch 2 as I think the stitches are tighter and look neater. I also use a Ch 1 for a hdc. You can choose either one.
- Ch 1 or ch 2 at beginning of row does not count as stitch unless indicated
