How to Crochet a Granny Fat Bottom Bag Pattern (part 2)

At last, the second part of How to Crochet a Granny Fat Bottom Bag. If you have been waiting for this post, I am sorry for the delay. My days became very busy with activities and life and then I was taken down with a cold. Thankfully, not COVID!

My last post included instructions on crocheting a basic granny square. Click here for instructions on crocheting the granny square. If you have finished the 18″ or so granny square, you are ready for the next steps.

Granny Fat Bottom Bag

Materials

• Various colors and lengths of cotton yarn (totally approximately 350 yards)
• G/4mm hook
• Piece of fabric for bag lining that measures ½” wider on all sides of finished granny square
• Embellishments like ribbons, lace, buttons, beads to add to the front of the bag 
• D shaped bamboo handles (2)
• Tapestry needle
• Needle and thread   (optional)

Lace Embellishment

1. Measure a piece of lace to fit across one side of the granny square. This side will be the top of your bag.
2. Attach the lace to your square with pins and sew it on by hand or sewing machine to rows below the top row. Do not sew the lace to the top row. Remove pins.
3. Add more layers of lace if wanted.

Lining
Cut a piece of fabric about ½”  larger than the finished granny square .

Iron the lining with ½” of the material folded under.

Pin the wrong side of fabric to the back of your granny square.

Sew the fabric to your granny square by hand or sewing machine.

Notes:

1. You could add pockets and/or a two-layer lining .
2. If hand sewing, top stitch the edges of the lining  for a finished look before sewing to the granny square.
3. Be sure to have the lining and pocket in the proper position before sewing.
4. Do not sew the lining to the last row of the square.

Sides of bag

Note:  the number of stitches on the sides of the bag may differ from my pictures. That is okay. Just be sure you have the same number of stitches on each side.

Row 1:  Starting at the right corner of one of the sides, attach yarn and make one single crochet in the same stitch, and the next 3 stitches,  *sc in the middle stitch of the first dc cluster, sc in the space after the cluster,* continue * *across to the end of the row.

Row 2:  ch 1, turn. hdc in each stitch to end of the row

Row 3-4:  Repeat Row 2

Fasten off, weave in ends and repeat for other side.

Top of bag

Note:  the number of stitches on the top of the bag may differ from my pictures. That is okay. Just be sure you have the same number of stitches on each side of the top.

Row 1:  Starting at the right corner of one of the top sides (including side stitches), attach yarn and make one single crochet in same stitch,   sc in each side stitch,  *sc in the middle stitch of the first dc cluster, sc in the space after the cluster,*    repeat * * across to the end of the row,  sc in remaining stitches, ch 1, turn  (see pic for end of row 1).

Row 2:  sc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn

Row 3:  sc in first 3 stitches, sc2tog, *sc in next 3 stitches, sc2tog* to end, sc in any remaining stitches, ch1, turn

Row 4:  sc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn

Row 5:  sc in first 2 stitches, sc 2 tog, *sc in next 2 stitches, sc2tog* to end, sc in any remaining stitches. Ch 1, turn

Row 6:  Sc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn

Row 7:  sc in first 2 stitches, sc 2 tog, *sc in next 2 stitches, sc2tog* to end, sc in any remaining stitches. Ch 1, turn

Row 8-12:  sc in each stitch across, ch 1, turn

Row 13:   sc in each stitch

Fasten off and a long tail (about 24”). Weave in ends.

Repeat for other side

Handles    

Notes:

1. The shape of the handle may change the look of the bag.
2. You may have to adjust the number of stitches across the top of the bag to fit your handle.

Step 1:  With the wrong side of the bag and the wrong side of the handle facing you, place a bag handle on the single crochet section and fold the edge over the handle to the first row (above the lining). Hold the edge in place with place markers or baste with yarn. Using the tapestry needle and long yarn tail, sew the flap in place.

Step 2:  Repeat Step 1 for the second handle

Embellishments

Add flowers, beads, fringe, buttons, bows to the front of the bag just below the handle
