Rustic Sunflower Granny Square

Recently I was designing the Rustic Granny Sunflower Square crochet pattern and tested the pattern with different yarns to see which yarn I liked best for this project.  The three yarns I used were Lily Sugar ‘n Cream, Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton and Tahki Yarns Classic Cotton.

Lily Sugar ‘n Cream is available in almost every craft store, various online sites and at  Yarnspirations.  I’ve used this yarn in many projects because the color line is fantastic, and the price is reasonable.   Most times I really love working with this yarn, but then there are other times when the yarn splits and I find myself redoing stitches frequently.  Not sure if this issue is the yarn or me.  ;’[

The second yarn I tried is Hobby Lobby I Love This Cotton 100% cotton yarn that is available only at Hobby Lobby (in store and online).  The wrapper states the yarn is a #4 weight yarn, but it feels a bit smaller – not a DK, but not a #4 either.   Yet, the square came out the same size as the Sugar ‘n Cream square using the same size hook.   Maybe because the yarn is smooth and so easy to work with.

While on vacation, I stopped at a local yarn shop and picked up the Tahki Yarns Classic Cotton.  I really enjoyed working with this yarn and love the look of the sunflower.  It is a DK weight 100% mercerized cotton yarn.  I used the same size hook (H) and crocheted loosely to get the approximate 5” x 5” square.

For my Rustic Sunflower Granny Square crochet pattern I chose the Lily Sugar ‘n Cream yarn.  I wanted a more country, rustic look and feel that this yarn gave to the square.  This is a great square for afghans or handbags. The other two squares turned out lovely, but I think they look a little more refined.  I Love This Cotton is smooth and soft and I’m already thinking of future projects with the sunflower pattern and this yarn.  The Classic Cotton square has a rustic look but it is very light and delicate.  I love to hold it in my hand and look at the fine lines and colors.  And it feels so good! I think this yarn would be perfect for a garment, shawl or scarf. What can I crochet with this yarn? Maybe I’ll try a necklace?
