Valentine Gift Bag Crochet Pattern

Crochet a darling gift bag for your Valentine!   The Valentine Gift Bag is a fun and easy crochet pattern for beginners or experienced crocheters. 

The Valentine Gift Bag works up in 2-3 hours and takes less than 100 yards of yarn.  You can change the color of the yarn and embellishments to fit any holiday or occasion (Easter, 4th of July, birthday, etc.). Great fun!

Valentine Gift Bag Pattern

Materials:

Worsted weight Red Heart Super Saver red (3 oz., 66 yds) and white (1 oz, 14 yds)

H / 5 mm hook

Tapestry needle

Stitch marker

Size:  9 ½” x 10”

Gauge:  gauge is not important for this bag

Abbreviations:  (US terms)

ch – chain

sc – single crochet

hdc – half double crochet

dc – double crochet

sl st – slip stitch

tr – treble stitch

dcblo – double crochet back loop only

dcflo –  double crochet front loop only

  ** –  repeat stitches between * * as indicated

Notes:

  1. ch 1 at beginning of row does not count as a stitch, but the ch 2 does count as a stitch
  2. Each row has 31 stitches

Instructions

ch 32

Row 1:  dc in 2nd ch from hook, dc in each ch to end. ch 1, turn  (31)

Row 2:  dcblo in 1st st and each st across.  ch 1, turn

Row 3:  dc in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn

Row 4:  Repeat Row 2  

Row 5. dc in 1st st and each st across. Change to white yarn, ch 2, turn

Row 6:  Skip 1st st, *tr in next st, hdc in next*, repeat * * across, ch 2, turn

Row 7:  Skip 1st st, *tr in next st, hdc in next*, repeat * * across. Change to red yarn, ch 1, turn

Row 8- 13:  dc  in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn

Row 14:  dcflo in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn

Row 15:  dcblo in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn

Row 16:  dcflo in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn

Row 17. dcblo in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn  

Row 18:  hdc in 1st st and each st across. Place stitch marker at end of this row

Note:  One side of the bag is now complete. The 2nd side starts with Row 19 with rows in reverse order of the 1st side ending with Row 1.

Row 19:  dcblo in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn

Row 20:  dcflo in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn

Row 21:  dcblo in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn

Row 22:  dcflo in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn  

Rows 23 – 27:  dc  in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn.

Row 28:  dc  in 1st st and each st across. Change to white yarn, ch 2, turn.

Row 29:  Skip 1st st, *tr in next st, hdc in next*, ch 2, turn

Row 30:  Skip 1st st, *tr in next st, hdc in next. Change to red yarn, ch 1, turn

Row 31:  dc  in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn 

Row 32:  dcblo in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn

Row 33:  dc  in 1st st and each st across. ch 1, turn

Row 34:  Repeat Row 32

Row 35:  dc  in 1st st and each st across.

Note:  Weave in all ends before joining the sides of the bag

Row 36:  Fold the piece in half with row 18 forming the bottom edge of the bag, ch 1, sc in each stitch on one side, across bottom (row 18) and up the other side

Row 37:  ch 1, sc in each stitch along top edge. Join with sl st to 1st sc

Row 38:  ch 1, sl st in each stitch along top edge. Join  with sl st to 1st st

Finish off and weave in ends.

Drawstring:  with white yarn

  1. Crochet 110 chain stitches (approximately 30” long)
  2. Weave drawstring through every third stitch in Row 4
  3. Pull drawstring to close top and tie a bow

Finishing:

Add a heart or other embellishment to the front of the bag or ends of the drawstring if desired and your bag is done!
